48 Republicans broke ranks to defeat the much-contested disaster relief bill that also contains measures to prevent the looming government shutdown. This is is being widely interpreted by Beltway insiders as House Speaker Boehner losing the tight control he has exerted over House GOP members throughout 2011.
“This is the beginning of the election year tremors,” said political strategist James Carville. “And the shaking’s going to get bigger, not smaller.”

Sean Hoare, the journalist who broke open the phone hacking case at the British tabloid News of the World, was found dead on Monday. This case, which has so far caused the closure of News of the World, torpedoed Murdoch’s bid for control of BSkyB, and precipitated a cascade of arrests, is now close to spinning out of control.
It’s good to see that Americans can see causes and effects, and we’re not the flatworms that Fox News and the Republican Party often take us for. A new poll by Quinnipiac University indicates that 54 percent of Americans think Bush is to blame for exploding the federal deficit and swelling unemployment, whereas just 27 percent believe it is President Obama’s fault.
Those figures are bad news for Republicans, who are hoping to use the nation’s poor economic state as a key issue in 2012.
Looks like the Pride Fairy came early this year. The New York state senate just passed Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Marriage Equality Act by a vote of 33-29.
All Democratic senators execpt pastor Ruben Diaz, Sr. voted for the measure. And they were supported by Republicans Roy McDonald and James Alesi, who had announced their intentions to support the bill before the vote. Republican Steve Saland, who spoke at length about his decision, said, “I hope that my parents would be proud.” They are, Steve!
Your Daily Guffaw: Hans Zeiger, Republican and Washington House of Reps member, has called the Girl Scouts a “pro-abortion, feminist training corps.” As one of the readers on our Facebook page commented, “I hope so!”
